Downer & Co

Charles Downer, a chemist based in North Parade, Port Adelaide, acquired James Monro's soda and cordial business in St. Vincent Street, as reported in the "Port Adelaide News" on May 17, 1879. Downer relocated the aerated water manufacturing to North Parade, as noted in another report on November 1, 1879.

In 1880, Charles Downer and John Henderson bought W.N. Crowder's aerated water business in Franklin Street, Adelaide. While Henderson managed the Franklin Street operation, Downer oversaw the Port Adelaide branch. They operated under the names Crowder & Co. and W.N. Crowder & Co., registered on February 16, 1882.

In 1888, Charles William Ive joined Downer and Henderson, leading to the formation of Downer & Co. This expansion included a wine and spirit section, significantly boosting business.

By 1892, the growing trade necessitated a move to larger premises. Reported in the "Cordial Journal" on October 1, 1889, Downer & Co. erected a new factory in Waymouth Street, complete with machinery moved from the Franklin Street site. The move was completed in 1892.

The company enjoyed a strong reputation for blending wine and spirits, trading across South Australia and Broken Hill, NSW. They also served as agents for leading British and foreign wines. In 1926, the company ceased operations.
