Robert Strutton started working as a beer bottler in 1867 bottling the Hindmarsh Breweries new owners Haussen & Catchloves beer. As the popularity of the Haussen & Catchlove beer increases Robert takes on a partner George Porter to assist business, though this only lasted a year with George leaving in 1871 to bottled Syme & Sison beer. Mr Strutton continued bottling the Hindmarsh brewery beer until 1876, when Robert took the large step to open his own brewery, along with new business partner Carl W. F. Trapmann. The pair purchased the old Hindmarsh Brewery on Manton Street, Hindmarsh renovated the site and opened the Kangaroo Brewery in September 1876. The Kangaroo Brewery was within a stones throw to the existing Hindmarsh brewery of Haussen & Co. Haussen & Co. stopped Mr Strutton from bottling their beers and beer was bottled at the Haussen & Co. Brewery. Mr Trapmann left the business is 1882 leaving to be a publican in Port Pirie, though he died soon afterward in 1885. With Mr Strutton carrying on the business alone, he decided to sell to Henry Edmeades in 1883, and the Brewery was closed in 1885 after an accident at the brewery that killed a worker. The brewery site was later sold to the Kangaroo Soap Co. Robert went back to bottling beer, and manufacturing softdrinks and cordial at the Blyth street address, but in 1886 he moved to Thebarton. The business continued until 1914 when Mr Strutton was getting too old to run the business, his wife died the year before and Robert was entering his 80’s. Robert Strutton died in his Thebarton home in 1919 aged 85.
