Mr Martin Stephens had previously operated a cordial factory on Freeman Street in Adelaide with Mr John Moss, this
partnership was dissolved in February 1877. Mr Stephens and Joseph S Solomon opened a new factory later that
year named The Adelaide Cordial Factory. The new factory was located on Currie Street, Mr Stephens was the traveler
for the business and Mr Solomon the manager of the factory. The new business employed Mr Joseph Clare who had
worked at Geo Hall & Sons as the brewer and cordial maker. The company started as a cordial factory but quickly started to brew ales and porters. The company quickly outgrew the Currie Street site and a premises on West Terrace was found to help relive the space problem. The two site solution posed several problems for the firm and a new site was purchased on Waymouth Street in 1882. The partnership between Mr Stephens and Mr Solomon came to an end in 1884, Mr Stephens continued with the business until 1887 when he became insolvent. Martin moved to Broken Hill in 1888 and continue his business of Brewing and making cordials, this only lasted 11 months and was again declared bankrupt. |
