William Jaeger purchased Charles Engelbrecht's old distillery on Commercial Street in 1898 and started the Swallow Brewery with Mr T Tormay. The joint venture was not a success and the company was wound up within the next 5 years. In 1902 the Mount Gambier Brewing Company Ltd was formed with 5 local hoteliers as shareholders D.J. O'Brien (Mt Gambier Hotel) John Spain (Commercial Hotel) P. Kenny (South Australian Hotel) Walter. J. Anderson (Globe Hotel) L. W. Engelbrecht (Pioneer Hotel) & Martin Ambrose Dwyer as the Manger / Secretary. The company originally used the Standard Brewery and then the South Australian Brewery but in the end decided to buy the unused Swallow Brewery in Commercial Street.
