Sydney Waldmere Lower initially worked for Barton & Dumas, chemists in King William Street, Adelaide, until 1887 when he opened his own store on Port Road, Hindmarsh. He married Edith Bastard on March 14, 1888. Edith's brothers, Thomas Dench Bastard and John Kitely Bastard, later operated Bastard Bros Aerated Water Manufactory in Hindmarsh. In 1890, Lower moved to Broken Hill, N.S.W., working as a chemist for five years before returning to Adelaide. From 1895 to 1901, he manufactured aerated waters under the "OK" trademark from a site on St. Vincents Street near Robe Street, Port Adelaide, alongside his chemist shop. Many of Lower's "OK" Codd bottles have been found in W.A., likely due to advertisements in the S.A./W.A. Post Office Directory. In 1901, Lower lived at the corner of Susan Street and Holden Street, Hindmarsh. He later returned to Broken Hill and then moved to Sydney, where he died in the 1930s. His wife Edith continued manufacturing aerated waters and was listed in the 1902 Directory. It was probably around this time that Edith's brothers took over the plant and machinery. |
