William Nathaniel Crowder, born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1818, arrived in South Australia in 1839 aboard the "Singapore." He initially worked for Sir J.H. Fisher before trying his luck on the Victorian goldfields. Returning to South Australia, he briefly ran a store in Adelaide before starting his ginger beer manufacturing business in 1853.
Crowder began as a ginger beer brewer in Grenfell Street, Adelaide, before moving to Flinders Street in 1855. In 1856, he took over Alexander Malcolm's aerated water factory on Franklin Street. Crowder also ventured into glass bottle production, founding The South Australian Glass Bottle Factory Ltd in 1874. However, due to manufacturing issues, the venture failed in 1875. The business was resurrected by Crowder and other directors in August 1875, but it closed after 11 years. Crowder's aerated water business was purchased by Charles Downer and John Henderson in 1880, operating as W.N. Crowder & Co. and Crowder & Co. Crowder lived in Lower Mitcham until his death in 1898.
