James Griggs Lewin arrived in South Australia in 1854 as a third mate on the ship "Navarino" alongside his future wife, Louisa Bisson. After settling in Adelaide, he worked as a ginger beer manufacturer in Kapunda before moving to Flinders Street, Adelaide, where he continued his beverage production ventures. He later lived in Ward Street, North Adelaide, possibly working for Crittenden's aerated water manufactory. By 1879, he and John Oliver Lewin were noted as cordial manufacturers in North Adelaide. However, financial difficulties plagued Lewin, leading to insolvency in 1881 and again in 1883, attributed partly to customers switching to a competitor. Despite setbacks, he persisted in the aerated water business, relocating to different addresses over the years. James Griggs Lewin passed away in 1885, with his funeral held at West Terrace Cemetery. In 1886, John O. Lewin was listed as a traveler residing in Norwood.
