Alexander Malcolm

Alexander Malcolm, born in Scotland in 1818, arrived in Adelaide in 1837. He initially co-owned a bakery in Hindley Street, later becoming the sole licensee of the 'Black Bull' Hotel. Known for his colorful personality, Malcolm was active in racing and adept at using newspaper advertisements to settle debts.

In 1849, Malcolm ventured into the manufacture of Carrara water, holding a patent for its production. He fiercely protected his patent, as seen in his advertisements. Despite his success, financial challenges led him to sell his aerated water manufactory to Robert Ramsay in 1853. Ramsay relocated the operation to Pirie Street.

Malcolm briefly resumed ownership of the 'Black Bull' Inn before his untimely death in 1853 at the age of 34. After his passing, W.N. Crowder took over aerated water manufacturing at the Franklin Street site owned by Mrs. Malcolm.
