Thomas Morey Rendell was born in Somersetshire, England, on May 20, 1832, and arrived in South Australia in 1848 at the age of 16. His father established a bakery and grocer's shop in Stephen's Terrace, Walkerville. In 1851, he ventured to Victoria during the gold rush, experiencing some success. Upon his return, he invested in his father's Adelaide-based bakery and grocery business, where he operated for several years. In 1875, Rendell relocated to Kadina, where he acquired C. Cavillo's business and continued in the same trade. Additionally, he began manufacturing aerated waters at his grocery, bakery, and ironmongery premises. He played a prominent role in Kadina's community, serving as a councillor and Mayor from 1885 to 1887. In February 1903, T.M. Rendell's son, Claude P. Rendell, became a partner in the business after working alongside his father. Due to failing health, T.M. Rendell retired later that year and passed away on September 16, 1904, at the age of 73. Claude P. Rendell continued the business under the name Rendell and Co. until April 24, 1914, when it was acquired by Haylock & Co. of Wallaroo.
