Samuel Owen, born in England in 1844, arrived in South Australia in 1864 aboard the ship 'Northumberland', where he met his future partner, Louis Johnson. Initially working as a bank messenger, by 1867 Owen owned land in Adelaide. From 1869 to 1873, he operated with Johnson as 'Johnson & Owen' from a shop/cordial factory in Currie Street. In 1874, Owen purchased Henderson & Co's confectionery business in Hindley Street. He continued producing confectionery and aerated waters until around 1902. Owen retired to his family home in Long Street, Hayhurst, and passed away on May 23, 1926, at his residence in Clarence Park, aged 82
