Mr F. A. Sonnemann started a jam factory in Hahndorf in the 1880's manufacturing jams and sauces, the business grew steadily until the premises and fruit supplies grew too small, and the business was moved to the fruit growing area of Renmark. As well as jams and sauces Mr Sonnemann started to manufacture aerated waters and cordials under the name Sunray Brewery though it is unlikely that any alcoholic beers were made, though several non-alcoholic beers were brewed (Murree Lager, Sunray Ale & Hop Beer). The Sunray name was dropped in 1926 when the company started to sell shares and traded under the name F. A. Sonnemann Ltd.
