| Located in Adelaide’s south-east corner an area with relatively few hotels the Green Dragon Hotel was built in 1858 by John Mitten. From the beginning, it served as a lively sports bar, even hosting local wrestling matches. Unfortunately, Mitten fell ill later that same year and was forced to sell the hotel to a Mr. Pearce. Mitten passed away in early 1859. The hotel’s fortunes improved significantly in 1870 when the Dragon Brewery was constructed behind it. The brewery quickly gained popularity, distributing beer across South Australia. Around the same time, the hotel underwent major renovations under publican John Bailey, likely giving it the distinctive appearance it retains today. The Green Dragon remained a local favourite, with the Walkerville Co-Operative Brewing Company purchasing the Dragon Brewery in 1901. The hotel continued serving Walkerville beers until the 1940s. Although it ceased operating as a hotel in 1998, the building found new life as a restaurant and is currently occupied by Fasta Pasta. Fortunately, the structure remains well-preserved, with its original exterior architecture still proudly on display. The Dragon Brewery operated as a Brewery at this site.  Hotel Building in 2025 |
